On food that rocks this week, we give you the know how to make the ultimate steak sandwich.
So here’s the thing, Every one and their mother thinks they can do a great steak sandwich,
but there’s a couple of secrets that i’m going to share with you that will turn Great into Unbelievable.
Lets start with the steak, you may be tempted to go cheap and get that thin sliced steak from the supermarket , Don’t.
Instead grab a nice scotch fillet around 120 to 150 grams, Next you want to bash it out and get it nice and thin. Couple of ways to do this - either you have a steak tenderiser or just use the bottom of a saucepan. Then you want to marinate the steak over night.
Olive oil , crushed garlic ,fresh thyme , salt and pepper. In an airtight container cover the steak with oil then add the garlic, thyme, salt and pepper. Leave it in the fridge for a couple of days. ( yes you need to start a few days out before you are ready to cook )
When you are ready to eat.
You’ll need bacon, egg , sliced red onion, sliced tomato, lettuce, cheese , tomato relish , dijon mustard mayo and good quality thick sliced sourdough bread.
Preparation is key -
Butter one side of your bread and toast on a hotplate or frying pan it until it’s golden, set it aside.
Bacon ( crispy only )
Egg ( sunny side up )
Onion ( nice and caramelised )
Set everything aside and keep it warm in your oven.
Now for the steak. Super hot grill / fry pan / bbq whatever your using. Your steak has oil on it, so be careful - probably don’t use an open flame bbq for this, the steak is going to cook really quick, like in a minute, so get ready.
Once you have flipped your steak, place your cheese on top, then bacon, then egg, then onion.
Your toasted bread then gets relish on the side, then place your steak on the relish, now comes the tomato and lettuce and finally the dijon mayo on top of that.
So the secrets are.
Quality steak marinated for at least 24 hours in olive oil, garlic, thyme, salt and pepper.
Good quality thick sliced sourdough bread.
Cook your steak hot and quick. ( no more than a minute )
5. Pre cook your bacon, egg, onion.
